The deadly mix of Oxycodone, a pain killer and alcohol takes the life of an athlete.

Prescription drug addiction is a dangerous behavior and quite often a sudden killer. One of the most popular painkillers is Oxycodone. A yet popular form of this drug is OxyContin which provides pain medication in a time-release form. All drugs have the potential to become a lethal mix, when consumed with alcohol, Oxycodone is no exception. Dispite massive time and money put for education on the dangers of mixing prescription drugs with alcohol we still see lives ended due to just this practice. This time a famous sports figure was found dead after he did the very exact thing that he probably had been warned about.

Derek Boogaard, was an NHL player who played enforcer for New York Rangers. He was 28 years old and was found dead in his Minneapolis apartment by family members on May 13, 2011.

Boogaard has in the substance abuse rehab program and has been suffering from back pain for years. His death was ruled as accidental by chief medical examiner, Dr. Andrew M. Baker in Hennepin County. He explained the reason that he concluded the death was accidental was due to considerations of many factors such as the level of toxicity at the time of death, medical and psychological history and hints of pervious suicide attempts.

Unfortunately, despite the strong warning of medical establishment to pain management doctors to limit the prescription of such medications, these medications are prescribed routinely and people are dying needlessly.
