New York Requires Alcohol Interlocks

On August 15, 2010 a new zero tolerance policy begins for driving drunk in New York State. This recent change is called Leandra’s Law. Leandra’s Law states that anyone convicted of misdemeanor or felony as a result of drunken driving will be required to install (for a minimum of six months) an ignition interlock breathalyzer device. The device will not allow the car to start if it detects a threshold level of alcohol in the driver’s breath. The interlock drunk driving device is the same device used for Florida drunk drivers.

According to the New York Office of Probation and Correctional Alternatives and their spokesperson, Robert Maccarone, New York is the 10th state to require drivers to install the devices after a first offense. In step with Florida and other states, the interlock device is installed at the driver’s expense. The alcohol interlocks are leased at a monthly charge of $70 to $110, and an installation cost of zero (some are installed free) to $100. According to Mr. Maccarone, New York has an average of 25,000 drunken-driving convictions annually, of which 4,000 are in New York City.

The interlock devices, which have to be leased from one of seven state-contracted manufacturers, operate from a premise of a low tolerance for alcohol. In New York, as in Florida, the interlock will prevent the car from starting if the driver has 0.025 blood-alcohol content or more. The criminal DWI limit is 0.08. In Florida the criminal DUI is also 0.08. Some interlock units have cameras that take photos of the driver, to prevent drivers from using other people to breathe into the interlock. In New York as well as Florida, if the driver fails the breathalyzer, the horn will start beeping and it will increase to an extremely loud noise, easily heard above car radios.

The New York state Leandra’s Law, also makes it a felony to drive while intoxicated with a child under 16 in the car, was created and named as a result of the 2009 death of Leandra Rosado, killed at the hands of a drunk driver.

New York, as in Florida, drunk driving and repeat drunk driving offenders are convicted with felony charges and face serious consequences as a result of their offense. The Cove Center For Recovery, an adult addiction treatment center in Fort Lauderdale Florida, provides DUI counseling for DUI offenders and residential addiction treatment for DUI or DWI criminal charges. The Cove Center for Recovery works with New York and Florida drunk driving offenders and the court systems by offering a
downward departure or diversion program in which DWI and DUI offenders can enter the residential addiction treatment program and receive the addiction therapy and help they need, in lieu of jail time served.

The Cove Center for Recovery and their diversion program is nationally recognized for its effectiveness and ability to remediate alcoholics and drunk driving offenders.

Ohio Addiction Treatment Overflow

Fairfield County, Ohio - Prescription Drug Addiction Treatment Overflow

The abuse of prescription drugs are not decreasing, in fact they are increasing. The increase use of prescription drugs such as Vicodin, Oxycontin, and other opiates are leaving many states faced with a dilemma; what to do in order to decrease the amount of illegal prescription drugs there are out on the streets. The problem became recognizable in Fairfield county, in Ohio when addiction treatment facilities had to start to turn down patients from receiving treatment. The abuse of prescription drugs has become so popular that addiction treatment centers in Ohio began a waiting list, and many youths on the waiting list have since deceased. Officials met in August, 2010 to discuss a plan of action.

In Ohio, since 2002, the percent of admissions for opiates grew eight fold, amounting to 31% of the admissions in 2008 for opiate abuse. However, the growth did not end there. In May 2010 67% of the admissions were for opiate addiction. 200 people are turned away a month for treatment due to lack of funding. People want to become sober, yet cannot receive help when they ask for it. The results of the rejection of treatment can lead to a negative moral. Something needs to be done to control the abuse of prescription opiates. According to a survey conducted, 1 in every 10 12th graders has used prescription opiates more than 20 times. This is a concern because these students could possibly end up the new generation of addicts. 1500 people died from unintentional drug overdoses in Ohio a year and the distribution of prescription opiates have increased by 325%.

Drug courts were established in Ohio, but only have a 63% success rate. So now the officials are talking about a supplemental plan of action. After 7 meetings, with the last one in August, addiction treatment was the prevailing topic of all. A task force prepared a report for the Ohio General Assembly and the Governor. The reports with suggestions from officials such as law enforcement and a task force will be presented to legislation by October 1, 2010.

There is an alternative to being placed on an addiction treatment waiting list in Ohio. If you or someone you know has made the first step in recovery by admitting that professional help is need, don’t wait. Call the Cove Center for Recovery - Addiction Treatment Facility. Why wait when The Cove can help you today! The Cove specializes in addiction treatment and recovery through innovate programs and interactive therapy not found at any other treatment center.

Treatment for Alcoholism in Illinois

As like other addictive and compulsive illnesses, the alcoholic is understood to have a genetically inherited defect in the neurotransmission system that causes a disturbance in their basic level of mood. Environmental factors and incidences of emotional trauma sensitize the neurological defect initiating a craving for a substance that will relieve their emotional discomfort.

The alcoholic, or alcohol dependent individual, may display a strong denial of the extent and nature of their problems, maintaining a steadfast belief that they can stop drinking whenever they want to, despite strong evidence to the contrary.

The Emotional and Financial Cost of Alcohol and Drug Addiction

The emotional and financial cost of alcohol and drug addiction on the addict and his or her family and friends

It is an understatement that drug addiction or alcohol addiction changes one’s life. The emotional and financial impact of any addiction will be felt for many years, and perhaps will never disappear. The emotional cost of drug addiction can adversely affect an addict’s family and friends in ways that can never be imagined.

As life disrupting as it might be, the best action of an addict is his or her decision to attend a drug or alcohol rehab facility.
Going to a drug and alcohol rehab facility for a period of time will remove an addict from the environment that he or she associates with the addiction. The addict will be isolated and nurtured in a new environment. The drug addict will be the center of attention for the time he is attending at drug rehab facility. He will feel he is important, he is respected and he is surrounded by people who try to understand him, rather than judge him. He is with others suffering from the same illness he is suffering from, the disease of drug addiction or alcohol addiction.

In an alcohol or drug rehab facility he will learn the underlying factor of his addiction, and causes of relapse. He will learn in group therapy sessions to talk about his illness, to touch on his fears and hopes and how those emotions affect his drug addiction or his alcohol addiction. He or she will talk about his or her past and events that have somehow impacted his or her life. The addicted individual will learn to put his problems in perspective, and see the positive in addition to the negative, and seek solutions for each one of those problems. Through daily group therapy, individual therapy and simple interaction with others going through the same journey as he is, he will know there is a path to recovery from the life of drug or alcohol addiction that will set him free. He will learn how to find that path and what dangers lay on that path that will force him off that path. The drug rehab facility’s counselors will spend many hours talking about the possibility of relapse and the events that can trigger a relapse. A good drug rehab facility provides proven techniques incorporating the traditional methods of drug and alcohol rehabilitation like the 12 Step, with other methods such as holistic approach to recovery to provide a more effective recovery program with a shorter recovery time. A good drug or alcohol rehab facility puts as much emphasis in teaching life skills for an addicts future life as to understanding of the addicts past life.
One such drug and alcohol facility is the Cove Center for Recovery. Cove Center for Recovery’s proven addiction treatment programs and their certified therapists have provided effective treatment for drug addiction, alcohol addiction for thousands of its clients throughout the years that they have been in business. At The Cove Center For Recovery, the daily activities are divided into therapy sessions and fun. Clients work on their addiction disease and have fun practicing a clean life style at the gym or at the beach.

Adults Getting Hooked: Cocaine Addiction

Cocaine is one of the more expensive drugs. Cocaine has been exploited in movies and in the press when celebrities such as models and Lindsay Lohan are caught using it. The street names for cocaine are coca, crack, rock, 8ball, powder, white, blow, sugar, coke, white girl, and crack rock. Cocaine is an extract from the leaves of a bush. Cocaine is very addictive and comes in powder, solid known as rock or crack rock.

Powder cocaine- dissolves in water and users can snort or inject it. When it is snorted users take a “bump” or a “line.”

Crack cocaine- a solid. It is made through a chemical process that leaves it in a “freebase” form that can be smoked. Usually smoked in a pipe or with aluminum foil.
Young males up to 25 are the biggest users, 8% using cocaine in the last year. 14% of adults in the US have used cocaine with one in 40 adults using within the past year. The effects are almost instant, interfering with the chemical messages of the brain. The effects of the high usually last from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Side effects—increase sense of energy and alertness, irritability, paranoia, anxiety, increased heart rate, feeling of invincibility, addiction, weight loss, withdraws, nose bleeds, deterioration of inner nose, trouble with sexual performance, heart attack, violent behavior, seizures, ulcers, kidney failure, and death.

Sings of cocaine use—dilated pupils, high levels of energy and activity, lack of appetite, excited speech, not sleeping, and lack of appetite.

Coke or Cocaine is highly addictive. A user is trying to achieve the same high that they felt on their first use, however, a user can never get the same high. It only takes a small amount of cocaine to become addicted. It only takes one use to overdose or die. Cocaine in the powder form is usually not pure. It is always “cut,” mixed with other products such as vitamin powder, heroine, laundry detergent, ect. Dealers will buy a small amount of cocaine because it is pricey. Then they cut the coke with other products to make a large amount of cocaine to sell, which earns a profit. If you or someone you know is struggling with cocaine, call the Cove for help. It is never too late to prevent and/or stop an addiction.

If you have come across our article/blog, is because you or someone you love is in need of help for cocaine addiction. Cove Center for Recovery is an Addiction Treatment Center offering a premier drug addiction treatment program that can help you or your loved one. Our aim is to treat the whole person, and not just an isolated symptom. Drug Rehab Facilities are Getting Creative, Aggressive and Effective in Treating Individuals with Drug and Alcohol Addiction

It has been many years that drug addiction or alcohol addiction has been correctly labeled as a disease.
As our attitude towards drug and alcohol addiction changed, we as a society became more understanding of the plight of drug addicts and their daily struggle for their addiction recovery.

This changing attitude brought up many different ways of addiction recovery including drug oriented approach such as Suboxone (Semisynthetic Opioid) and Methadone (synthetic opioid developed in Germany in 1937) and non-drug oriented approach like holistic drug addiction recovery or holistic alcohol addiction recovery.

At Cove Center for Recovery, in realizing the many different methods and programs of addiction treatment, and the many different ways that addicted individuals respond to treatment, we apply a combination of therapies.

Our inpatient drug rehab programs deal with addiction, recovery and codependency with the tools of therapy and spirituality. We educate, treat and train men and women inflicted with drug addiction or alcohol addiction, to change their lifestyle in order to first and foremost, break the chain of addiction and just as importantly as treating addiction to reduce the chance of relapse.

The causes of drug addiction or alcohol addiction are different in men and women. Women, for the most part, respond more favorably to treatment of their drug addiction or alcohol abuse when the emotional aspect of their life and lifestyle is factored in their addiction therapy.

Cove Center for Recovery provides gender oriented therapy that addresses special needs of women and men in their journey to drug and alcohol addiction recovery. In reality, when incorporating the underlying causes or issues that contributed to one’s alcohol or drug addiction, the chances of relapse for that person is reduced as well.

Call Cove Center for Recovery and talk to one of our certified drug rehab therapists to find out about our alcohol rehabilitation program, drug rehabilitation program and how they incorporate various proven therapies like the 12 step, cognitive therapy and holistic drug treatment therapy to achieve results.

OxyContin (Oxycodone) deaths increase dramatically in Broward County

Fatally caused by the popular prescription drug Oxycodone (OxyContin) has increased across the state of Florida, especially in Broward County. An article written in the Sun-Sentinel in June of 2010 stated that overdoses by oxycotin (oxycodone) have increased by 57 % in 2009 from 2008. The numbers of fatalities in Broward country reach 160, which puts Broward in second place behind the St. Petersburg area. The article also touch on that Broward County is the only county in South Florida that has seen a rise in fatalities because of Oxycodone (OxyContin) drug abuse. Broward’s northern neighbor, Palm Beach County, had 129 fatalities that were linked to Oxycodone (OxyContin) drug abuse which was a 15% increase from 2008. (Santana, 2010)

OxyContin (Oxycodone) is a prescription drug that is given from moderate to severe pain. Unfortunately, OxyContin can be highly addictive. In addition to this, the body can build up a high tolerance for the drug quickly, requiring addicts to increase the amount. Oxycodone (Oxycontin) drug abuse will use the drug by chewing it, crushing the drug and snorting it, and even injecting it. They do this because by crushing the pill they can achieve a heroin like high. OxyContin is usually not done by itself and is accompanied by the use of another depressant such as alcohol. One of Oxycodone’s (Oxycontin) most adverse effects is respiratory depression. When Oxycontin is mixed with alcohol for example both work synergistically to create a better high for the user, but place them at higher risk for respiratory depression which could lead to respiratory arrest and finally death.
If you have come across our article, is because you or someone you love is in need of help for Oxycodone addiction. Cove Center for Recovery is an Addiction Treatment Center offering a premier drug addiction treatment program that can help you or your loved one. Our aim is to treat the whole person, and not just an isolated symptom. During the addiction treatment process we will work with the client to identify the factors that may have contributed to their addiction– home, work, relationships and medical history. Intervention for Drug and Alcohol Abuse Works

Intervention Definition:
An intervention is an orchestrated attempt by one, or often many, people (usually family and friends) to get someone to seek professional help with an addiction or some kind of traumatic event or crisis. The term intervention is most often used when the traumatic event involves addiction to drugs or other items. Intervention can also refer to the act of usinga technique within a therapy session.

Intervention Description:
Intervention: Drugs and Alcohol

Substance Use, Substance Abuse, Alcohol Addiction, Drug Addiction
Intervention is a process of uniting loved ones, related to or friends of an individual struggling with alcohol addiction , drug addiction, or prescription drug addiction. An Intervention is necessary when an individual struggling with alcohol addiction, drug addiction, or prescription drug addiction is in denial of the problem, yet the chaos and destruction of behaviors is evident to loved ones, family, and friends.

INTERVENTION WORKS!
Intervention works! Addiction Treatment works! However, it can be difficult to get an individual to treatment. Most people do not know the exact nature of the problem or situation for which self-medication behavior eases the pain. Whether it is the individual alcoholic or addict, or the loved ones involved, most people are unable to identify the underlying issues, prior to addiction treatment. An individual might be struggling with depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues. Trauma or a lack of appropriate coping skills might also be the underlying issues. Regardless, an Intervention works and addiction treatment works, if the individual struggling with addiction can find his/her way to help.

Steps to an Intervention:

Using Drugs and Alcohol
Substance Use, Substance Abuse, Alcohol Addiction, Drug Addiction

Pre- Intervention

The Pre-Intervention Step, is the time in which you decide you can’t take this behavior, chaos, and self-destruction anymore. This is the time when you take action. You, loved ones, family, and friends, plan to unite to discuss the next steps. During the Pre-Intervention Step, you will contact the INTERVENTIONIST, to discuss the history you’ve experienced with the individual who is struggling with alcohol addiction or drug addiction or prescription drug addiction. Once you’ve contacted the INTERVENTIONIST, the following steps are easier and guided by your INTERVENTIONIST, who will give you support, validate your concerns, and provide guidance thorough the INTERVENTION process.

Intervention Preparation

The Preparation Step, is the time in which you gather a history of the chaos and self destruction of the individual struggling with addiction, and the impact his/her behavior or addiction has had on you, your life and other people and their lives. The Preparation Step is also a time in which you discuss the appropriate addiction treatment program for your loved one. You will decide on a treatment program and decide on the payment method. The Preparation Step is a time in which you and everyone else involved in the INTERVENTION will write letters to the alcoholic or addict, describing your concerns, your feelings, the purpose for the intervention, and your hope for the future. You will also pack appropriate clothes and necessities for the individual who will enter a treatment facility.

Intervention

The Intervention Step is the act of the INTERVENTION. At this time, everyone involved in the INTERVENTION will gather in one location. Everything will have been planned and discussed with your INTERVENTIONIST. Your letters will be ready. Everyone will be gathered at the Intervention location. Your loved one will arrive or will be sleeping and then awaken by you or another individual. The Intervention, at that time, will begin. You might encounter an angry, surprised, or defensive loved one. You might have a difficult time or an easy time, sharing your intentions of this INTERVENTION. Your loved one might even refuse to participate and leave the location.
If your loved one agrees to stay and proceed with the INTERVENTION, he/she will sit in a chair and will be instructed as to the purpose of the intervention and the steps that will follow. During an Intervention communication is extremely important. Loving, positive, yet firm and direct communication is imperative.
Everyone will read their letters. Many of the letters will refer to the destruction caused by alcohol addiction, drug addiction or prescription drug addiction. Letters will be emotional and typically include painful memories of the chaos of addiction. Once the letters have been read, your loved one will have an opportunity to respond. The INTERVENTIONIST will facilitate this entire process, re-directing as needed.
The final step of the INTERVENTION is to explain that your loved one’s bags are packed and ready for his/her addiction treatment program. Transportation will be waiting.
Everyone will say their goodbyes and your loved one will leave with the INTERVENTIONIST for the beginning of the addiction treatment program.

Post-Intervention

Post Intervention for the alcoholic or addict begins with the transportation to an addiction treatment facility.
Post Intervention for the family of the alcoholic or addict begins, once the loved one has departed the INTERVENTION location. During the Post Intervention, family members and friends discuss their experience and validate their letters, feelings, and concerns . It is the beginning of a hopeful and healing journey to recovery for the alcoholic or addict and family and friends.
