Reality Talk Radio Show Premiers June 5th 2011

Premiering Sunday, June 5th 2011, “Reality Talk Radio Show” is the newly added recovery resource to Cove Center for Recovery and Inspirations Teen Rehab. Callers can tune in to WIOD (100.3 FM, 610 AM) from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm to experience a talk show like no other.

Join us for a fun-filled and ZANY approach to "REAL LIFE" issues and facts in the world of drug addiction and recovery. Reality Talk Radio Show will feature guest speakers and special appearances by celebrity guests, news-worthy information and giveaways to callers.

Talk show hosts, Karen Corcoran Walsh and Christopher Walsh are active participants and sponsors of non-profit organizations working in the prevention and treatment of drug abuse with a special focus on raising awareness on the national epidemic of teen drug abuse. Their recent volunteer and work includes the Chris Evert Charities, The Lorenzo White Foundation, The Writers in Treatment Organization, and the PRISM awards (for depiction of addiction in the film industry).

Also part of the show is host Michael Lohan, continuing his work with the prevention of drug abuse including an upcoming appearance on Dr. Drew's Celebrity Rehab, numerous radio show guest appearances, and the development of a "Reality Rehab" show, soon to be announced.

How Do Drugs Work in the Brain?

Drugs tap into the brain's communication system and disrupt the way nerve cells normally send, receive, and process information.

Drugs work in the brain by:
Imitating natural neurotransmitters (chemical messengers in the brain). Because of the similarity in chemical structure between drugs and neurotransmitters naturally produced by the brain, some drugs, such as marijuana and heroin, are able to "fool" the brain's receptors and activate nerve cells to send abnormal messages via the network.

Overstimulating the reward system by flooding the circuit with dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter present in regions of the brain that regulate movement, emotion, motivation, and feelings of pleasure. And nearly all drugs of abuse, directly or indirectly, activate this system. Some drugs, particularly stimulants like methamphetamine and cocaine, cause nerve cells to release abnormally large amounts of natural neurotransmitters or prevent their normal recycling, which is needed to shut off the signal between neurons.
