Women Alcohol Abuse Stigmatisms

Females struggling with alcohol abuse and addiction are at a disadvantage. The treatment available for women with alcohol addiction is often inadequate. They are usually not geared to women and the needs associated with women and the stereotypical stigmas that follow women who drink, such as,  the party girl or the divorced house wife mask the problem of treatment for these women. The concern for the lack of adequate alcohol abuse treatment for women has risen. Especially because the rate of alcohol related incidents for women have increased by forty-four percent and has decreased for men by nearly nine percent.  Unlike many may think, women  being arrested due to their alcohol addiction are contrary to the stereotype, they are hard working and even church going women.

The problem of the inadequate treatment stems from the out dated view of women. Women, generally, are not tied to alcoholism because they are expected to maintain proper behavior, women are supposed to be viewed as nurturing and there is nothing feminine about getting trashed. In fact, it was not until the 1990s that health professionals even cared to start to learn about the difference between the effects of alcoholism and addiction between men and women. The emerging research reports that women require different treatment then men because the addiction affects the women differently. According to Scientific American, the enticement of drugs and alcohol may be synced with the female’s monthly cycle.

Alcohol like drugs is highly addictive and addiction is a medical condition.  Like all medical conditions, treatment is necessary.
