The misuse of prescription narcotics is on the rise in several parts of the world with prevalence of abuse in Canada and the United States. Each year there are thousands of deaths due to the illegal use of opiates such as Oxycontin. In fact, in Ontario there have been more deaths in the past decades due to abuse of prescription drugs, even surpassing the number of lives that are taken from HIV. According to the DEA, there are about 300 deaths a year, but 6,000 emergency visits.
The illegal use of prescription narcotics such as Oxycontin, also known as hillbilly heroine, is a persisting problem. According to a health administrator, these prescription drugs are more powerful than other drugs which it also means they are easier to overdose on. In order to help curve the problem, Canada, is going to put a new tracking system in place. This system will help restrain the abuse of the highly addictive Oxycontin, along with other prescription drugs. This system will keep track of painkillers, sedatives, stimulants, and other prescription narcotics and other controlled substances.
Drugs, such as Oxycontin, are dangerous because they are directly absorbed into the bloodstream. In fact, thirty-five percent of the drug gets absorbed instantly. The drug attaches to certain receptors in your spine and brain, blocking your body from receiving messages. This drug is very dangerous, especially mixed with other drugs and/or alcohol.
